In the 1950s and 1960s, bassist Henry Grimes toured and recorded with such jazz greats as Albert Ayler, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan, Sonny Rollins, Cecil Taylor, and many more. After a 33-year disappearance during which he was presumed dead, Grimes emerged from oblivion in a storied “rediscovery” in Los Angeles before he moved to New York in 2003 to resume his top-flight music career. In his first appearance in Los Angeles since 2004, Grimes performs a set with percussionist Alex Cline, pianist Ben Rosenbloom, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, local reedman Vinny Golia, and vocalist Dwight Trible. To open the show, Trible, who has worked with Billy Childs, Charles Lloyd, Pharoah Sanders, and Horace Tapscott, joins pianist John Beasley to explore the outer reaches of vocal and instrumental technique.

Master bassist (and now violinist) Henry Grimes has made a phenomenal comeback after receiving the gift of a green bass from William Parker in December, ’02 to replace the instrument Henry had been forced to give up some 30 years earlier. Between the mid-’50s and the mid-’60s, the Juilliard-educated Henry Grimes played brilliantly on some 50 albums with an enormous range of musicians, including (in addition to those listed above) Don Cherry, Roy Haynes, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Pharoah Sanders, and Archie Shepp. But after a disastrous trip out west in 1968 with a damaged bass he couldn’t pay to have repaired, he disappeared in downtown Los Angeles. These days Henry is back, living, working, and teaching in New York City. He has been playing primarily as a leader with many great musicians of this era, including Marshall Allen, Marilyn Crispell, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, David Murray, Marc Ribot, and Cecil Taylor, and touring extensively in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and the Far East.
