Rashaun Mitchell, Stephin Merritt, Ali Naschke-Messing: PERFORMANCE

Rashaun Mitchell, Stephin Merritt, Ali Naschke-Messing: PERFORMANCE

“Mr. Riener (in electrifying form) and Mr. Mitchell...are two of the greatest dancers before the public today, and you’re continually shown new facets of them.” – The New York Times

The intoxicating choreography of former Merce Cunningham dancer Rashaun Mitchell meets the fanciful musical stylings of Magnetic Fields singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt in a space of liquid luminosity—a beguiling visual design created by installation artist Ali Naschke-Messing with lighting design by Davison Scandrett. A celebration of the mysteries in the art of performance, of on-the-spot wit and invention, and of the absurd, this one-of-a-kind collaboration is inspired by an observation from Richard Avedon: “We all perform. It’s what we do for each other all the time, deliberately or unintentionally. It’s a way of telling about ourselves in the hope of being recognized as what we’d like to be.” Mitchell is joined by dancers Hiroki Ichinose, Cori Kresge and Silas Riener; Merritt performs solo, on and off the stage.
