“Yang’s wacky-sophisticated take on a co-dependent mother and daughter, both neurotic writers, strikes universal chords of recognition…” The Hollywood Reporter

While the COB opens officially on October 19, on October 15 REDCAT is proud to kick off the series with an “Advance Screening” of Girls Always Happy (117 min., 2018), by Yang Mingming, who made a splash with her earlier short, Female Directors (shown at REDCAT as part of the 2014 COB). Premiered at the Berlinale, this first feature confirms Yang’s wickedly original talent, as she sassily casts herself as a writer crisscrossing the maze of the Beijing hutongs on her scooter, “playing men” for what they’re worth and having a complex, volatile and not-always-happy relationship with her mother.

REDCAT joins a distinguished consortium of film institutions in Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC to present the China Onscreen | Biennial (COB), returning for a fourth edition in 2018, (October 19–December 2). This year’s program draws an unusual, unexpected picture of China in her vast ethnic, geographic, and cultural diversity – underscoring the growing number of young female filmmakers turning a gendered gaze at a rapidly changing society.
