Angel City Jazz Festival: Mark Dresser Quintet & Lisa Mezzacappa's Glorious Ravage

“Challenging and joyful, [the Mark Dresser Quintet] embraces tradition while extending it, and balances precise compositional deliberation with effusive improvisation.”

–  All About Jazz

Master double bassist and composer Mark Dresser infuses extended techniques with impassioned musicality, and his quintet draws on a collaborative power to explore the beauty of melody, counterpoint and harmony, swing, rhythmic invention and cyclical form.

Sharing the bill is the world premiere of Glorious Ravage, a song cycle for large ensemble plus film, by Bay Area composer and bassist Lisa Mezzacappa. Glorious Ravage is inspired by the writings of Victorian lady adventurers, and features an all-star ensemble of improvisers, including Dresser, Herb Alpert Award winner Myra Melford, Vinny Golia and New York vocalist Fay Victor, as well as new film, video and animation by Konrad Steiner, Alfonso Alvarez, Kathleen Quillian and Janis Crystal Lipzin.
