CAP Plaza de la Raza: Nuestro Barrio

CAP Plaza de la Raza: Nuestro Barrio

Co-presented by CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP) and Plaza de la Raza

Nuestro Barrio takes place in the past, the present, and in a mysterious between-time, guided by the iconic figure of La Muerte.  It tells the story of Emilia and Jorge and their families and neighbors, who grow from childhood, to adolescence, to adulthood, and beyond, within the borders of their neighborhood and their city: El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula.  The action takes place during the time when traditional Mexican L.A. was undergoing a momentous change. The year is 1877 when we start, and by the end of the third act, it is 1886. But, in truth, we are in a timeless world, where young thespians, historians, poets, and musicians from the 21st century gather to reenact the past with a theatrical flourish and lively attention to the rituals of every day life. This performance by the CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP)/ Plaza de la Raza Youth Theater company will give the audience an opportunity to - in Emilia’s words: “realize life while they live it- every, every minute!”
