Community Action Center:

A.K. Burns and A.L. Steiner

In the Gallery at REDCAT

The Gallery at REDCAT presents a one-night screening and the Los Angeles debut of Community Action Center, a sociosexual video by A.K. Burns and A.L. Steiner that explores the erotics of queer sexuality through an intergenerational cast of friends, lovers and collaborators. Community Action Center is a unique contemporary womyn-centric composition wherein sex, sexuality and the complexities of gendered bodies are made inherently political. The project seeks to expose and reformulate paradigms that are typical to the typologies of pornography and is set to a soundtrack of music by Chicks on Speed, Effi Briest, Electrelane, K8 Hardy, Lesbians on Ecstasy, Light Asylum, MEN, Motherland, NGUZUNGUZU, I.U.D. (Lizzi Bougatsos & Sadie Laska), Kinski and Thee Majesty (Genesis P-Orridge), with original compositions by Justin Bond, Nick Hallett & Sam Greenleaf Miller, Ashland Mines & Wu Tsang, Sergei Tcherepnin and Tri-State Area.

The event is part of a new series of informal, temporary gatherings initiated by REDCAT assistant curator Aram Moshayedi that take the form of one night only presentations of recent work and works-in-progress. These events occur between the Gallery’s regularly scheduled exhibitions and provide a platform for projects that are fluid and immediate and that seek to convene in a timely manner around pressing topics of inquiry.

The screening takes place inside the Gallery at REDCAT at 8:30pm and is followed by a discussion between the artists. This event is free and open to the public. Adult content.

A.K. Burns lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. A.K. uses sculpture, video, collage and performed social actions to pervert and exploit interpretations and implications of form. A.K. is a founding member W.A.G.E. (Working Artists and the Greater Economy), and co-editor of RANDY, a biannual transfeminist arts magazine. In 2010 A.K. was the artist-in-residence at Recess Activities Inc., NY, with her partner Katherine Hubbard. She received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Bard College, Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts.

A.L. Steiner uses constructions of photography, video, installation, collage, collaboration, performance and curatorial work as seductive tropes channeled through the sensibility of a cynical queer eco-feminist androgyne. Based in Brooklyn, NY, Steiner is a collective member of Chicks on Speed, the co-curator of Ridykeulous, a founding member of W.A.G.E. (Working Artists and the Greater Economy) and collaborates with numerous visual and performing artists.
