Creative Music Festival

Creative Music Festival Featuring Anthony Braxton

"No heady composer conveys more joy through his music, joy detectable in his spirited, shimmying conducting [than Anthony Braxton]."—Village Voice

"There’s not a lot of middle ground when it comes to multiple woodwind player Anthony Braxton and his mathematics-based compositions/improvisations."

Curated each year by CalArts’ Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, the Creative Music Festival explores the vision of one artist whose work is primarily improvisational. The subject of this year’s festival is Anthony Braxton, a luminary of late-20th-century musicmaking. His work, both as saxophonist and composer, has broken new conceptual and technical ground in the jazz and American experimental musical traditions. He has developed his own extensions of instrumental technique, timbre, meter and rhythm, voicing and ensemble make-up, harmony and melody, and improvisation and notation into a personal synthesis of art-music traditions. Braxton performs in various ensemble configurations with CalArts faculty members and performers from throughout California.
