Gob Squad: Western Society

Gob Squad: Western Society

“Theater in its purest and best form—ingeniously put together, extremely funny, entertaining, crazy, with a charming whiff of anarchy in the air.” – Kulturradio rbb

U.S. Premiere

Co-presented with Center Theatre Group

The ingenious British-German ensemble playfully probes Los Angeles with two audacious projects that shrewdly mix performance and impromptu video to elevate the banality of everyday life into soaring artistic experiences. Every night is different when these adventurous artists draw inspiration from the streets of downtown L.A. and sunny Venice Beach.

Richly adorned in bling, Gob Squad creates an unruly, high-styled romp that is also a sublimely intimate multimedia snapshot of the American family, set to irresistible live music. Partly inspired by a month of anthropological research at Venice Beach and environs, this glamorously finessed and surprisingly affecting event features stunning gold stilettos, bucket loads of Ferrero Rocher – and a live video recreation of what may be the least watched video on YouTube. Gob Squad invites audience members to play key roles in their awe-inspiring and deeply moving portrait of civilization in the 21st century, with the color and sound turned up to 11.

The weekend preceeding Western Society, Gob Squad kicks off REDCAT's Fall 2014 season with Super Night Shot!

Western Society is a Center Theatre Group production commission, made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Presented with support from The British Council and Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF), the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
