James Carney Quartet

James Carney Quartet

"James Carney possesses a journalist’s ear for narrative and a master percussionist’s rhythmic sense… His abilities are world class." LA Weekly

The Herb Alpert Creative Music Series

Hailed as one of the brightest lights in today’s jazz firmament, pianist and composer James Carney has crafted a fresh, alluring and intellectually vibrant mix of modern creative and avant-jazz — music full of unusual grooves, funky rhythms, moody meditations, even cinematic drama. Returning to Los Angeles for the first time since 2004, Carney is joined by tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby, bassist Chris Lightcap and drummer Dan Weiss. Carney is a winner of the Thelonious Monk International Composers Award, Best Jazz Artist honors from the LA Weekly, and a 2007 Chamber Music America New Works commission. His most recent album is the widely acclaimed Green-Wood, released on Songlines in 2007.
