“Keene raises unwritten possibilities from the past’s dormant margins.” —The New York Times
“Keene finds inspiration in newspaper clippings, memoirs, and history, and anchors them in the eternal, universal, and mystical.” —Vanity Fair
Award-winning novelist, poet, and short fiction writer John Keene exemplifies the genre fluidity at the leading edge of literature today. In his REDCAT presentation as the 2020 Katie Jacobson Writer-in-Residence, he will read from his current and forthcoming work. Keene is the author of the novel Annotations; the poetry collection Seismosis; translator of Brazilian writer Hilda Hilst’s notorious erotic novel, Letters froma Seducer; and author of the celebrated short fiction collection, Counternarratives. In fall 2018, he was awarded a five-year John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, for his work “exploring the impact of historical narratives on contemporary lives and re-imagining the history of the Americas from the perspective of suppressed voices.”
