"Rushes is full of wonderful, illusory textural effects and little bursts of surprise…a boldly different sonic landscape.” – SFGate
In a pair of concerts to delight dreamers of wild double-reed dreams, the bassoon is put to innovative, downright surprising uses across a wide range of compositions and improvisations. The program features Edward Elgar’s rarely performed, achingly lyrical Romance for Bassoon and Orchestra; Toshio Hosokawa’s theatrical masterpiece Voyage II, for bassoon and chamber ensemble; and film composer David Newman’s dark and moody Movement, for bassoon and chamber orchestra, written expressly for virtuoso bassoonist Julie Feves. Capping the evening is the West Coast premiere of Michael Gordon’s epic Rushes—a hourlong trance piece for seven bassoons. Jonathan Stehney, Sara Schoenbeck and Archie Carey are among the celebrated guest soloists performing with the CalArts Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Mark Menzies.
