Machines and Strings

“Seductive, ambiguous, ephemeral, potentially hazardous, Knoles hypnotizes with her sonic beat” —Los Angeles Times

"[Krieger] ranges wide as he seeks the spots where noise and beauty meet." —Anne Power, Los Angeles Times

"This bold ensemble [Isaura String Quartet] hails from the City of Angels and you should keep an eye—and an ear—on them..." —Thomas Deneuville, I Care If You Listen

Featuring internationally acclaimed artists Amy Knoles, Ajay Kapur, and Ulrich Krieger, Machines and Strings is an interdisciplinary project curated for REDCAT by the Isaura String Quartet. An immersive concert experience, Machines and Strings brings together CalArtians from the disciplines of Music, Theater, Critical Studies, and Integrated Media, presenting renowned performers and up-and-coming artists with an array of diverse voices. Works by artists including Chrysanthe Tan, Stephanie Smith, Sarah Belle Reid, April Gerloff, and Jules Gimbrone are performed in collaboration with interactive lighting and projection by alumni artists from the 2018 CalArts Expo creative team. Isaura presents the world premiere of Ulrich Krieger’s completely revised quartet Up-Tight II. They will also join the KarmetiK Machine Orchestra, directed by Ajay Kapur, combining with custom-built robotic musical instrument Lydia for the premiere of a new work by Amy Knoles.
