My Barbarian Artist Talk

My Barbarian: PoLAAT Artist Talk

Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon and Alexandro Segade offer an informal presentation of their ongoing Post-Living Ante-Action Theater (PoLAAT) project, following a February 2010 workshop and presentation in Madrid, Spain.

My Barbarian’s Post-Living Ante-Action Theater (PoLAAT) workshops are residency-based projects in which the collective works with local artists, musicians, and actors to develop original work. The resulting performances address the staging of liberation and are adapted from sources that include the Living Theater’s Paradise Now (1968) the antitheater’s Pre-Paradise, Sorry Now (1969), and the Group Theater’s Paradise Lost (1935) by Clifford Odets.

PoLAAT continues My Barbarian’s self-conscious performance of counterculture, translating what’s thought of as the ’60s into a performance of the present. Through this project, the artists consider the successes and failures of democracy in the face of increasingly powerful hegemony.

This project is made possible with generous support from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs.
