Studio: Spring 2011
Los Angeles artists present new works and works-in-progress in this ongoing program curated to offer audiences an interdisciplinary mix of dynamic performances, while giving experimental artists a creative platform to investigate new ideas and new directions for their work. This edition of Studio was curated with guest curators Tina Kronis and David Roussève, and features the following original works:
AWESOMETOWN GROUP: LANDSCAPE #4
AwesomeTown Group constructs a visually arresting interdisciplinary performance in which mundane imagery from everyday life is pushed into the realm of the monstrous.
COREY FOGEL: GRAPHIC SCORE #9E4B1
Composer, drummer, and performance artist Corey Fogel joins six other musicians as he performs in, and responds to, his own composition built on improvisational interpretation of multiple systems of graphic notation and quadraphonic arrangement.
HOLLY JOHNSTON/LEDGES AND BONES: WANT (work-in-progress)
Choreographer Holly Johnston's richly layered work for six dancers weaves lush and fluid movement with moments of bold aggression and projected video to call out the active drive of individuals as they confront obstacles and pursue desires on the path to fulfillment.
MAX KING CAP: RECKLESS KNOWLEDGE
Visual artist Max King Cap's new performance draws on potent images and paired-down theatrics to create a meditation on inspiration and madness, power and possession, while examining the potential for treachery in both word and image.
REINA ALEJANDRA PRADO SALDIVAR: WHIPPED!
The time-warped ideals of a good Mexican girl are challenged by a virile new tentant as performance artist reina alejandra prado saldivar takes her character Virginia Buenaventura on a humorous journey of sexual self-discovery, with lessons from family, fetish culture and Eartha Kitt.
ROXANNE STEINBERG & STEVE LOCKWOOD: ALL NOW
A single projected figure—viewed in a faceted 360 degree revolve—fuels the transformation and interpretation of this work by dance artist Roxanne Steinberg and composer/performer Stephen Lockwood that reveals the depth contained in a single moment.
Funded in part by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
