Wroclawski Teatr Lalek: The Last Escape

Los Angeles premiere

Presented in association with Arden2 and the Skirball Cultural Center

Long heralded for its avant-garde stagecraft, the groundbreaking Polish company makes its Los Angeles debut with a eye-opening production based on work by Polish writer and artist Bruno Schulz—best known for the 1933 collection The Street of Crocodiles and now recognized as one of the most original literary voices of the 20th century. The stories in The Last Escape center on a protagonist named Jozef, a pensioner who defies surrounding reality through an intense inner life and viscerally felt feats of imagination. All the while, the stories are haunted by what Schulz called the “one and only human tragedy—the tragedy of time.” Production adapted, designed and directed by Aleksander Maksymiak.

Made possible by The City of Wroclaw Cultural Department; the Polish Consulate, Los Angeles; the Polish Cultural Institute, New York; and POLAM Federal Credit Union, Los Angeles.
