Artist Opportunities

The Studio Series and the New Original Works (NOW) Festival allow local artists to develop high-risk pieces in a low-risk, supportive setting--one that comes with a well-equipped space, a professional technical team and audiences primed for daring work.

STUDIO

Studio was created to give new artists an opportunity to hone their skills and offer established artists a chance to test new material and works-in-progress before an audience. A revolving panel of working artists curates each edition, selecting artist through a live showing process.

SHOWING AND PERFORMANCE INFORMATION

Thank you for your interest in REDCAT’s Studio Program. Studio is an informal showcase of original contemporary and experimental works in dance, theater, multimedia and music. Presented by REDCAT, the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, each edition features a mixed-bill program of works that require minimal technical support, and are less than 15 minutes in length.

The technical and performance schedule is based on REDCAT’s desire to present new works in an informal setting. Each project selected for the program is provided a half-hour time slot the Sunday of the run to set light and sound cues and deal with basic staging issues. If your vision of the piece cannot be realized in this short time, the work might best be presented through another REDCAT program. For more information, visit redcat.org

There is a $100 stipend for each piece presented.

**Showings are an important component of the Studio curation process. Lead artist / collaborators / performers should hold the showing date and make every effort to attend.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

REDCAT is accepting proposals for original performance works to be presented in the 13th Annual New Original Works (NOW) Festival, which is designed to support the development and presentation of contemporary performance in the Southern California region. The three-week interdisciplinary program of dance, theater, music, and multi-disciplinary works will take place at REDCAT in late July and early August 2016. The festival features a flexible schedule to accommodate shared programs of short works and occasionally some longer projects. REDCAT provides development support through technical assistance, access to the theater with its sound and lighting inventory, and an honorarium.

The Festival takes place at REDCAT’s performance space in the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex. Projects are selected through a proposal process, with an emphasis on new projects in development and/or early career artists. The proposals and work samples will be evaluated based on the vitality of the idea proposed, the quality and integrity of the work of the artist/ensemble/collaborators, the appropriateness of the project to a festival of new, contemporary works (and to the festival format), and the artist’s / team's ability to successfully execute the project.
