All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace Publication Announcement

The Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (REDCAT) presented All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, an exhibition and performance program on the impact of artificial intelligence, as part of the Getty’s PST ART: Art & Science Collide.

Newly published by East of Borneo, the accompanying publication combines contributions by the participating artists with invited contributors to inform the next generation of AI—rooted in alternative directions for its future proposed by artists. Edited by Daniela Lieja Quintanar with Talia Heiman, the book includes text contributions by Nora Al-Badri, Minne Atairu, Back to Back Theatre, Stephanie Dinkins, Annie Dorsen, Mashinka Firunts Hakopian, Interspecifics, Kite (Music, BFA ‘14) with Scott Benesiinaabandan and Jason Edward Lewis, Charmaine Poh, João Ribas, Sarah Rosalena, and Kira Xonorika, as well as documentation of screenings and performances by Arca, Nao Bustamante, rafa esparza, MUXX, Kite and Interspecifics, and Manthia Diawara.

The publication is available for purchase online as well as in-person at REDCAT, and marks the culmination of the multiyear research, exhibition, performance, and publication project. The project was initiated and directed by João Ribas, Steven D. Lavine Executive Director of REDCAT and Vice President for Cultural Partnerships. The exhibition was curated by Daniela Lieja Quintanar with Talia Heiman. The performance program was organized by Edgar Miramontes, Katy Dammers, Daniela Lieja Quintanar, and Talia Heiman. The publication was made possible with the guidance of Adriana Widdoes and the East of Borneo team, and the book design is by Ella Gold (Art MFA 19).

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace is among more than 70 exhibitions and programs presented as part of PST ART. PST ART: Art & Science Collide, the latest edition of this landmark regional event explores the intersections of art and science, both past and present. PST ART is a Getty initiative. East of Borneo celebrates the publication of All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace at Now Instant Image Hall. The evening will feature a screening of Charmaine Poh’s in the shadow of the cosmic (2023), followed by a discussion with Daniela Lieja Quintanar, Talia Heiman, and Kira Xonorika.
