Angel City Jazz Festival

Dan Rosenboom’s Coordinates Orchestra and Devin Daniels

About

The 18th annual Angel City Jazz Festival presents a dynamic double bill featuring two outstanding Los Angeles-based artists.

Trumpeter, composer, and producer Dan Rosenboom (CalArts Music MFA 07) premieres music from his forthcoming album CoordinatesCoordinates exemplifies Rosenboom’s genre-spanning approach as it moves from progressive jazz to metal, world music, symphonic registers, and the intimacy of chamber ensembles. A multifaceted exploration of the self, in this album Rosenboom was inspired by numerical patterns, cosmic temporalities, and friendship. This performance features an extensive cast of virtuosic musicians from the Los Angeles jazz community and Hollywood film recording studios.

Alto saxophonist Devin Daniels will premiere a new composition commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s Jeff Clayton Memorial New Note Award. Known for his versatility, the Inglewood native excels in a variety of styles while maintaining the integrity of his unique voice.

Rosenboom at his toughest and most colorful, busting the walls to find grandeur in the collapse of modernity and opening cracks into the corners of the soul.

about the artists

Dan Rosenboom is an internationally recognized trumpet player, composer, and producer. He is known as a prolific member of the Los Angeles creative music scene, having released more than 25 albums of original music as a solo artist and bandleader, and has supported over 60 artists across over 100 releases on his label, Orenda Records. Rosenboom is a proud member of the Hollywood studio musician community and has recorded for over 200 major film and television soundtracks with such notable composers as John Williams, Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard, Alan Silvestri, Alexandre Desplat, and many more. He has also performed with such elite ensembles as the LA Philharmonic, the LA Chamber Orchestra, and the LA Opera. His own music eschews genre distinctions and draws from such disparate influences as Black American Music, metal and experimental rock, contemporary classical music, folk music from the Balkans, and a broad range of progressive music from the avant-garde. He studied at the Eastman School of Music, CalArts, and UCLA, where he earned advanced degrees in music. The Los Angeles Times has called Dan Rosenboom “a musician dedicated to exploration and expression, regardless of anyone’s imagined boundaries,” and “a phenomenon.”

Alto saxophonist Devin Daniels stands out as one of the most unique and versatile voices to emerge from LA’s rapidly evolving creative music landscape. The Inglewood (CA) native has the unique ability to fit into any musical situation without sacrificing the integrity of his individual voice. That, combined with his warm and thoughtful personality, is why Daniels has been invited to perform with bands led by Gerald Clayton, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, John Beasley, Sam Barsh, and Jamael Dean.
