About the artists
João Maria Gusmão (Lisbon, 1979) and Pedro Paiva (Lisbon, 1977) live and work in Lisbon. They started working together in 2001 on the InMemory exhibition at the Galeria Zé dos Bois in Lisbon. Their work has been shown in monographic exhibitions in several contemporary art museums and centers, including MUSAC - Museo de Arte Contemporâneo de Castilla y León (2007), the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art (2008), the Kunstverein Hannover (2009), and the Ikon Gallery (2010). Between 2011 and 2014: IMO Projects, Le Plateau, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Museum Marino Marini, the Kunstnernes, Hangar Bicocca and Candem Art Center.
They have taken part in international events such as the Gwangju Biennale (2010), Manifesta (2008) and the Sao Paulo Biennale (2006). In 2009 they represented Portugal with Experiments and Observations on Different kinds of Air at the Venice Biennale, where they were invited to the main event, The Encyclopedic Palace, in 2013.
