Revered Indonesian choreographer and dancer Rianto debuts at REDCAT with his acclaimed work Medium, a powerful contemporary take on the Central Javanese form of Lengger: the traditional, cross-gender dance developed over hundreds of years and taught to Rianto by masters of the form. Occupying a liminal space between male and female, human and non-human, conscious control and trance, Medium resists the conceptualism of Western contemporary dance to remain thoroughly of the body. Medium is Rianto’s universal call for freedom, opening the space it holds beyond binary opposites and customs and religious principles. A series of studies into the relationship between Rianto’s religious body, social body, political body, and traditional body, Rianto’s virtuosic movement language is combined with a powerful live vocal and percussion score by Cahwati. Together they unfold the relationship between movement and sound that lies at the core of the Lengger tradition.

There is something deliciously knowing about the way Rianto melds the traditional and the contemporary. Ultimately Rianto opens up a space for us…to delight in the erotics of hybridity transgression.
